Hello & welcome!

I’m Lucy Melville, an artist from Auckland, New Zealand. My paintings explore the patterns and energy of the natural world β€” birds, landscapes, light, and form β€” blending realism with abstraction to capture the energy within the beauty I see.

Keep reading to discover the story behind my art, and how I came to create pieces designed to bring beauty, light, and energy into your home and life.

Beginnings

Creativity has always run through my family. My grandma was an amazing ceramicist and watercolour artist, and my mum is also deeply creative, so painting, crafts, and drawing were a constant part of my childhood. Those early experiences fostered a deep love for art. Although I loved art at school, I decided it would be something I pursued later in life, focusing first on learning more about the world, people, and business.

Rediscovery

Throughout my twenties, I pushed my creativity aside as I built a career as a quantity surveyor. My career progressed quickly, and I was proud to become a mentor and director at a great consultancy. But in 2016, a significant head injury turned everything upside down. I was incredibly unwell and had to slow down completely. During my recovery, I picked up a paintbrush again as part of my rehabilitation β€” and it changed everything. Painting became a form of healing, expression, and rediscovery.

Finding My Style

The first paintings I created after my head injury were fluid, colourful, and whimsical β€” full of freedom and movement. But soon I felt drawn toward geometry: bold, bright fractals that created depth and energy. This exploration led to my first series, Imperfectly Perfect, which celebrated the beauty in imperfection and symbolised my recovery. I decided to hold my first exhibition to share these works, and its success gave me the courage to pursue art professionally β€” first part-time, and then full-time in 2020 after the birth of my first daughter.

My Art Today

Eight years on, my style has evolved into a blend of abstraction and realism. I draw on the soft, organic forms of nature β€” birds, landscapes, foliage β€” layering them with geometric elements that reflect the light and energy of the environment. Influenced by patterns found in nature, fractal in their repetition, my bold acrylic works on canvas and wood explore light, energy, and the hidden structures that shape our magical world.

Purpose

What inspires me most are the quiet moments in nature β€” the flight of a tΕ«Δ«, the soft curve of a fern, the shifting light across distant hills. I begin by observing and sketching, watching how light and form interact, then abstract and amplify those impressions through colour and shape. My hope is that my paintings remind people to pause, notice, and feel the energy that connects everything. Through my work, I aim to capture not just how the world looks, but how it feels β€” vibrant, interconnected, and alive.
